You've probably gotten the message by now: a certain noisy faction of Ole Miss fans are not happy about the removal of less-than-P.C. mascot Colonel Reb from the school's sidelines and logo, and they're going to make sure their voices are heard regardless of what their school's administration (and a likely majority of their fans) would want.

But just in case you haven't, the "Colonel Reb Foundation " (and their not-at-all hyperbolic URL saveolemiss.com ) is here to make certain you have. Once more, gents, with feeling:

In case you can't see the top billboard there (up now in Oxford), here's what it looks like up close:

So that's subtle. By visiting the Foundation's site, you can also download a Colonel Reb "Truth Kit " (PDF) and that the Colonel is (presumably) less racially insensitive for being a whitewashed version of an early-20th century African-American Oxford resident. (Yes, less.)

As for what the Foundation will actually accomplish, other than publicly continuing to rub the university's face in its racist past despite its desperate attempts to leave that past behind? Nothing. But as we're all learning, that's not going to stop this particular faction of Ole Miss fans anytime soon.

HT: Red Cup Rebellion .

i understood it when they banned the rebel flag from the stadium (safety issues, plus it made us look like a bunch of rednecks waving the stars and bars) but i can tell you as a resident of mississippi that ole piss fans are extremely upset with this situation, a previous poster made the point of comparing their old mascot (a white southern plantation owner type) to their new mascot (a BLACK bear) but what most people dont see is what alot of the newer t-shirts, banners, and school flags actually have on them, they dont have a BLACK bear on them, they have a BLACK dude on them, a big, black, muscled up ole piss football player standing with his arms crossed, so basically they have changed their merchandising from colonel reb to some black guy, thats where the hypocrisy lies in this situation, they outlaw the colonel reb because it puts a bad image on the school, yet they use a black football player for merchandising purposes, when your school and administration have been one of the most racist institutions of learning, i can tell you this state has come along way in the past 40 years, but i dont think they have come far enough for the university of mississippi to replace colonel reb with  black dude and not catch sh!t for it, enjoy it ole piss

this pc stuff is really out of hand, if a mascot truely offend s you then you may need to get a life.  Its not worth worrying about one way or another and nobody should be that offended by a fictional masot of a school or any sport.  People who are offended by stuff liek this usually are just bored and looking for a fight.

I'll never understand why people give a ____ about what their mascott is? I'm a proud alumn from the University of Iowa, but could really care less if they changed the team name/mascott/whatever tomorrow. It's a freakin' mascott! If it affends someone, get a new one!

I'm not an ole miss fan but their has been a lot of African American players come through ole miss and at least I think they haven't had a problem with it so why get rid of Colonel rebel. As long as that mascot has been ole miss mascot did they think their wasn't going be a fight on either side.

"And remember the American Civil War was fought over States rights, major issues being Federal versus state laws, which in INCLUDE slavery."

Wrong.  The civil war was fought over slavery, but Lincoln needed to get much greater northern support and support from the border states by saying it was not.  The article of secession in SC specifically refer to slavery as the issue repeatedly.  In addition, the whole "states rights" argument goes up in smoke when the very states claiming that was their issue insisted on violating northern states' rights by demanding that fugitive slave laws be enforced.  In 1860 Congress passed a law to make it unconstitional for the Congress to affect slavery in the territories.  What about the right of the Federal Government to make the rules in Fedral territories?  Or to allow new states to determine their own laws?  No, their whole position was about extending the authority of their windbag politicians, and letting the valiant sons of the south pay for the politicians' hypocracy with their blood.

I am sorry if southerners feel a sense of wounded pride at having lost the war, but you can't then decide on your own what the connotation of the confederate flag means.  When it was used by the KKK and their friends as their symbol 100 years later in the fight to prevent red-blooded American citizens from exercising their constitutional rights, its meaning is clear without anyone having to manipulate it.

Now all that said, I fail to see where a cartoon caricature of a silly white guy is racist, nor why naming a team "rebels" is harmful to anyone, unless it genuinely discourages people from attending the University, and I highly doubt that it does.  Why are we questioning a silly symbol, anyway, when the SEC has much bigger racial problems in its hiring practrices and much bigger ethical issues in its recruiting?

Most folks like me do not mind the Colonel, but when others use it as a sign of racism against young men who may want to attend Ole Miss then I say good-bye to the mascot. I have been fine without a mascot for years now! Look at Michigan they dont have a wolvering roaming the side lines and we dont have a Rebel on ours either! Let it go!

nothing racist about the rebel flag? yea ok nothing except the connotation it carries. pshh. i am against changing mascots but lets be real.

You mean the connotation YOU associate with the Confederate Flag, yes? And remember the American Civil War was fought over States rights, major issues being Federal versus state laws, which in INCLUDE slavery. Same kinda stuff we're going through today, for example marijuana sales.

I don't agree that the mascot is racist but a lot of people view it as such. Instead of making them change it, like that's some kind of punishment, I say make them keep it the way it is. It's only when we start trying to forget past mistakes that we open the door for them to happen again. Live and Learn.
