San Jose State is a target of the Mountain West

Who knew that an entire conference could disappear right before our eyes?  That seems to be exactly what's happening to the WAC.  The conference has already lost Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii to the Mountain West -- which has been hemorrhaging teams of its own -- and now it seems like the conference could be about to lose another school.

According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, talks have begun within the Mountain West about extending San Jose State an invitation.
San Jose State has emerged as a potential expansion target of the Mountain West Conference, according to sources familiar with discussions between SJSU officials and their counterparts in the MWC.
A longtime member of the Western Athletic Conference, San Jose State is one of several schools that could be invited to join the more prestigious MWC if the 10-team league expands by two in order to stage a football championship game.
The Mountain West’s board of directors is scheduled to meet Monday in Las Vegas. Expansion is on the agenda, but the league isn’t expected to issue invitations.
The other teams reportedly in consideration are another WAC school in Utah State, and three C-USA schools in UTEP, Houston and SMU.  Though, according to the source in the story, it's unlikely either Houston or SMU would leave C-USA.  Which makes San Jose State an attractive option to the Mountain West in the same way that the lone girl at the bar looks more attractive because she's the only girl there.

Though the Mountain West will tell you it's because of the television market that San Jose State brings for the Mountain West's television network, as well as the fact it'd be joining fellow California schools Fresno State and San Diego State in the conference.

San Jose State is a target of the Mountain West

2000 was a pretty decent year for the Spartans....A trip to the CWS for the baseball team, and ranked No 1 for the soccer team.  And their water polo team is always a contender....that's, ummmm...yeah, that's it.

Oh... and wave inventor Krazy George is an alum.

San Jose State is a target of the Mountain West

Well heck, let's just move all the teams from the WAC to the Mountain West haha. What's the difference, right? The Mountain West has already taken steps backwards by losing their most competitive schools, and this adding of San Jose State isn't going to help the conference any.

Oh God, no! Just what any Boise State fan does not want to see. More WAC teams coming along to the MWC. History repeating itself as it is.
When Boiise State joined WAC, then were followed by former conference foes NMSU, USU, and Idaho. This brought down the quality of the WAC as it was.
Now, we see the MWC facing the same diluting of quality. Just stop it at bringing Nevada, Fresno, and Hawai'i. The rest of WAC is a waste, IMO.
What does it take for Boise State to leave these teams behind for good, lol? JK.
If SJSU was showing ANY signs of sometime soon getting better at football, I would have a different thought. But that doesn't look as if that is happening.

San Jose State is a target of the Mountain West

It is really interesting to see what the bottom of the barrel really looks like.  San Jose State to the MWC?  I guess that would be fitting since Utah, BYU, and TCU all left, the MWC has lost its luster.

Why add this team? At least get Idaho who has a solid coach and is a rival of Boise State! Utah State is an up and comer also. They have a really solid coach in Gary Anderson. That's a lot more reasonable then San Jose State. Just adding them to a conference won't change who they are! That has to happen from within. If they just stick with what they have and really try to get both Houston and SMU, those teams might jump ship and come over for yet still, a possible BCS berth over Big East. With the addition of TCU unlikely though.

How awesome would this be??  That would mean that the WAC would lose more than half of its members from the last count and they would forfeit their FBS status!!!  I couldn't wait for the Idaho Vandals to be FCS again!!!  Do it!!!! ASAP!!!!!!

If you think San Diego State is a "commuter" school, look no further than San Jose State. Might as well be SJCC....

They probably think that they could make something out of the Spartans because it is in the Bay Area market.  Utah State, Idaho, New Mexico State, and Louisiana Tech are not in markets that size.  Also, there don't seem to be many teams other than maybe UTEP who would want to leave Conference USA for another non-AQ conference.  If any other team leaves Conference USA, it will likely be for an AQ conference.  What the WAC could do if it has three members left is almost nothing.  Texas State, UTSA, and Denver would likely not want to join anymore because of the fact that everyone else has deserted the sinking ship.  Where those teams go is also anyone's guess, but I am sure that the Sun Belt would not mind them joining to give them more stability.  As always, there is much to be decided here. We shall see how much the Mountain West has won this time.

San Jose State is a target of the Mountain West

Really?  San Jose State?   I mean, can anybody tell me if they are any good in any sport?  Have they won any WAC titles in anything in the past decade (not 30 years ago in track) -- why would the MWC take a school that is pretty much terrible over an up-and-comer (if there really are any that aren't Montana or maybe Weber State)?  The MWC will become the first super-conference pretty soon, ironically setting the stage for others to go to 16 teams...the little guys will turn the tide...but on it's face San Jose State adds nothing.
