Newton investigation still ongoing

Cam Newton will be taking the field Monday night in Glendale. There's no doubt about that. But it doesn't mean he's out of the NCAA woods just yet.

That's the biggest takeway from this report by Fox Sports' Thayer Evans , who spoke to a pair of Atlanta-area contractors who had agreed to do repairs on Cecil Newton's church in Newnan, Ga., and were interviewed by NCAA investigators the week before Christmas. The good news for Cam is that both said they weren't aware of any kind of scheme to funnel money to the Newtons:
[Emory] Wilcox and [Eddie] Norris, listed on separate city permits for work to be done on Cecil Newton’s struggling Holy Zion Center of Deliverance, each told the NCAA investigators that they were never asked to deliver nor did they deliver money to Newton.

“There may be something there, but nothing related to me,” Norris told

The interviews also did nothing to support the theory that the Newtons had used an illicitly-paid windfall to repair the church, as Wilcox revealed that Cecil had yet to pay him for even minor electrical work. The church has avoided being condemned, a Newnan city spokeswoman confirmed, but is not yet up to code enough to host church services.

Despite all that, Evans' story illustrates that while the attention into the investigation into Newton's eligibility has waned, the investigation itself is carrying on all the same. Until the NCAA announces that it's officially concluded its look into the Newtons' finances -- and that that look produced nothing damning -- the possibility will remain that the next overturned log will uncover the improper benefits that would make Cam ineligible for the 2010 season.

Not that anyone will actually read this and think of it logically, but...Bush returned his Heisman without it ever being requested.  Again was all media hype, and he ended up saying he'd do it without the request.  (BTW while recognized as returning it, he hadn't done it as of the ceremony this year.)  I also think there's no reason for him to return it.  He was declared ineligible b/c of dealings with agents, and how did that effect his play on the field?

On to using anything Thayer Evans types.   I can only suggest printing it on 3-ply b/c anything less will just hurt.  He's a hemroid on the backside of the world, and how he's even still getting a paycheck is amazing to me.  How about Doyel or Dodd do some investigative reporting into Thayer's background bc it won't take much to bring out somethings that exposes him as a fraud and hardly qualified to cast judgement on others.  So if you see anything that refers to Evans' "article" or as a "source" of a story, better off not reading it, but if you do take it as you would a tabloid.

JA Adande said it the other day on Around the Horn - Reggie Bush should be beating down the door at the Heisman Foundation demanding his Heisman back.  How is what his father did different from what Newton's father did?  Cam didn't know, neither did Reggie - and I don't even like the Trojans - but what is right, is right.

It's sad how this man child is making himself bigger than the game.... kinda like Favre did to the NFL. There is alot of others guys out there playing there butts off only to be overshadowed by egomaniacs like this. Hope the Ducks win right away so we won't have to see a trophy go to the Ducks years down the line....

OSU 5 and sCam Newton have shown the ncaa for what it is. An organization disigned to cheat real athlets of an equal playing feild while allowing the bcs conference school to cheat away.

I'm going to hate on him more if they end up beating Oregon only to have the title taken away 3 years later like Southern Cal....

I realize from your scare quotes, ECoastTrojan that you do not consider this writing to be journalism. But I would like to reiterate your point. This is not journalism; it's blogging. And it seems there are no standards for blogging or bloggers. Bloggers just say whatever comes to mind, insult anyone they like (or dislike, more to the point), make sense or not, and strike back ferociously at anyone with a different opinion.

But, hey, which of us isn't guilty? That's the point. This isn't journalism. Journalism ain't even journalism anymore. But this certainly isn't.

And what's this? A Bruin and a Trojan agreeing on something? When worlds collide.

What no one realizes is that Cam feeds off the adversity.

I expect him go out to tomorrow's game on a mission & will probably have his best game.  Most people would crack in his situation & would have definately cracked in some of AU's deficits earlier this season, but Cam & the entire Auburn team (offense & defense) has willed themselves to victory on more than one occasion.

This team is a special team that is tight knit.  When they look into each others eyes on the field there is a bond & trust that I have never seen before.  It hasn't been all Cam all year like the media likes to portray (everyone gets it done when it counts the most).

Keep hating on Cam  - it'll only make him & the rest of the Tigers stronger.    Wink

What happened to their earlier mantra of  "having to act quicly" when they felt they had to declare him eligible before the SEC Championship game?  What changed that calls for taking their time this time?   I don't really care what they find anyway because they already conveniently "bent " the rules for his dad's "factual" actions anyway.  As a matter-of-fact I hope it elevates to a bigger circus than it already is.  The NCAA is a "fine" organization.  How do you get a job with these clowns anyway???

As a side note it's too bad that the church can't meet code yet or they could "pass the plate" to help pay for brother Newton's defense team down the road.

hey cooper, I'm not gonna bash you any more.
a couple of things, I would want to run Ingram out of Alabama if he and/or dad was to jeopardize the university. Other bama fans may not feel that way, but I do. when dareus did his little deal at the begining of the year, I was ready to shoot him before the verdict came out.
I don't want to see AU get in trouble, I could care less. But to see people treat the problem with open arms is just plain weird.

If you really are in Glendale, quit worrying about this board and go have a blast. I know I would. Should be a great game.
