With Pittsburgh furiously on the hunt to replace dismissed head coach Mike Haywood , one of the popular candidates has been Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley. Rumors began swirling on Wednesday night that Bradley was going to accept the open position, and a report from is claiming that the assistant coach had sent text messages to at least two players informing them of his plans to become the new Panthers head coach "once details are worked out. "

According to the report,
Bradley texted to one player: "Love you kids. Going to miss you. Wish I could take you with me. Anything I can do for you, let me know."

UPDATE, 10:15 p.m.: reporter David Jones has retracted the report about Bradley sending text messages and taken responsibility for the error.

Pitt, for what it's worth, has denied that Bradley or anybody else has been offered the job, but even the denial is tepid at best; the spokesman admitted "mutual admiration" between Bradley and the school.

Bradley interviewed for the job on Tuesday , and has been unable to be reached by phone or email since then.  He was considered one of the frontrunners for the job along with Alabama assistant Sal Sunseri , and to a lesser extent Tulsa head coach Todd Graham , Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst , and former Florida defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.

After finishing his career playing at Penn State, Bradley, a lifelong Pennsylvania native, moved immediately to the Nittany Lions sidelines.  He has been an assistant coach under Joe Paterno since 1980, and even had stints of head coaching duties when Paterno was suffering health issues.

For Pittsburgh, the hire is about as classy as they come.  Bradley will be able to quickly change the tone of a program that currently appears to be lost and looking for direction.  He has been recruiting the area his entire career and his roots in the college game run deep.  After Dave Wannstedt , that will be a welcome asset for Panther fans.

Im perfectly fine with the football team screwing up and bottom feeding as long as the basketball program is in full string. And no, I don't say that because they've been "bad" (according to you they're irrelevant for winning 10 games last season). I say that because college football as a whole is screwed up. It clearly isnt an even playing field for any team that doesnt have Nike or Big Oil behind them giving them enough money to buy their players. Atleast, as far as I can see, Penn State stays true to fair-game recruiting and hard working coaches, but you can't say that for Ohio State, Oregon, or all of the SEC and Big 12 teams. Don't get me wrong, it definitely happens in basketball too, but it's a completely different sport ( see Butler in last years championship game ). But because of all the money hungry conferences, sponsors, and horrible post-season, I would rejoice if NCAA football fell off the face of the earth faster than Lindsay Lohan. Unfortunately, too many homers who never stepped a foot inside a college classroom keep this off brand version of the NFL going. For me, I'll continue to watch Pitt and am hoping for them to hire Bradley, but when it boils down, nothing compares to NFL's excitement.

OOh, snappy comeback, GP4! If "84" stands for my IQ, then "4" obviously represents yours. I don't care if you trust anyone associated with JoePa or not -- that's your personal woodie to contend with. As for me, I hope Bradley gets an offer, then tells Pitt to pound sand because of the way Pederhead treated him the first time around.

If Scrap does take the job, you are getting a better HC than you deserve. Thank God there are other Pitt fans who are far more rational than you -- those are the ones who see the value in Bradley reviving a program that has been irrelevant for 30 years.

If Bradley takes the job, he will have Pitt contending in the Top Ten inside of three years. I can't wait to hear you boasting about how you supported him from Day One -- that's about the level of credibility you have.

Don't leave your basement, GP4 -- the garbage man is really an FBI spy, and the mail lady works for a super-secret world organization that knows you have subversive and perverted thoughts about your neighbor kid's hamster.

Does the 84 stand for your IQ?  I would not trust anyone associated with PA Jo for two weeks let alone thirty some years. Do I think Paterno stays awake at nights dreaming up ways to screw Pitt...well, lets say this he probably is awake most of the night going to the pisser and I am told that is when he does his best thinking.

I also gather from your profile you majored in the treatment for diseased cattle...that is good as that what good ole PSU is famous for.

Since JoePa doesn't seem to want to leave or name a possible successor, Bradley might be wondering how long it would be before he becomes the actual head coach.  I think JoePa wants his son to succeed him and getting Bradley out of there would open up the door.  Besides, Bradley's brother is the team physician for the Steelers.

Pardon my relative lack of familiarity as I don't closely follow PSU, but isn't Bradley in essence the de facto head man at Penn State already?  Wouldn't he be first in line to replace JoePa once he shuffles off this mortal coil (since he's never going to retire, apparently)?

If those things are true, I have to ask why would Bradley have any interest in Pitt at all?  Is he just flirting to get a raise & remind PSU's fans & admin that they need to keep him around?

No disrespect intended, just some queries from a totally outside perspective...I've got no dog in that fight.

And if you take the "oxy" out of oxymoron, you have GoldPanther4. So you really think Tom Bradley would sabotage his professional career and personal integrity to move to Pitt and sabotage the Panther football program? News flash: (1) Scrap would NEVER do that. and (2) The Pitt football program ain't nothing to write home about right now. Wanny was a great recruiter who couldn't coach the talent he got. As others have pointed out, Bradley recruits good athletes AND turns them into great defensive teams.

You Paterno haters crack me up. You act like Joe spends every waking number figuring out how to screw over Pitt. WAKE UP, DUDE -- your own people (Wanny, Pederson, Pitt prez) are doing the screwing!!!!! Keep squealing like a pig -- it's not Joe or Paterno that have you bent over the log.

Time to replace the aluminum foil on your anti-alien hat, GP4 -- I've heard the aliens in Area 51 are planning an uprising.
