Report: Tennessee DC in line to replace Muschamp

There is nothing like adding insult to injury when Texas capped off one of the worst seasons in program history by saying goodbye to their coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp.  When Muschamp departed to succeed Urban Meyer at Florida, the Longhorns were left in a deep divot with no long-term exit strategy.  The future of the program is certainly a concern for Texas fans everywhere, but first they need to hire a new defensive coordinator.

A report Sunday evening from the Austin American-Statesman noted sources beginning to point to Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox as a leading candidate to join Mack Brown's staff in the same position.  Wilcox, 34, is in the first year under Derek Dooley at Tennessee, he previously spent three years as the defensive coordinator at Boise State.

Wilcox could supply the youth and energy that Muschamp displayed in his early seasons as defensive coordinator, but he is likely far from ready to take the headset from Brown.  Texas does have the challenge of filling four open positions on the staff this offseason, so trying to tab a new coach-in-waiting is likely low on the priority list.  Brown was able to overcome major challenges when he first arrived at North Carolina (making the postseason) and at Texas (getting past Oklahoma).  Now he will have one last major task for the Texas football program: re-building for the future.  Judging by Brown's track record, it would not surprise me if he pulls it off.

Vols ranked 70th in nation on defense which was okay considering he had nothing to work with..Vols had 2 games where AJ and Jones had career days in blow outs where Wilcox had no adjustment or answer..He did okay with no depth; rag tag defense..This guy is still cutting his teeth against SEC teams like USC;Bama and LSU..Certainly he would have more talent at Texas but still has a ways to go against the big boys!!! I think the longhorns should go after a proven NFL DC especially since money is no object

Just a little over-dramatic, don't you think? I live in Austin, and it ain't quite like that. As Longhorn fans, we know this team will be back on top. We also know the "coach-in-waiting" tag was just that. Mack ain't going anywhere for a long time. UT's a.d. Deloss Dodds has the same sentiment as Mack Brown as do Longhorn fans: If you don't want to be here, don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out. Plus, the defense wasn't all that this year anyway (ie: UCLA game). Good luck Will, I wish you great success.

His work at Boise St was very good, of course he only faced toip flight teams twice a year.  I am not sure how much we can judge his one season at Tennessee.  Certainly it takes time for players/coaches to get on the same page philosophy wise, especially when they ran two different schemes the previous two seasons.

I would think this hire would be a stretch for Texas.  Granted, Tennessee was quite young this season, but I believe they finished 9th or 10th in the SEC in defense, and it was Wilcox's first year as a DC at a major program.  They must be basing this hire on potential, but I do not know how they would have such a good read on the guy.  Maybe he has some sort of Texas background that I do not know about.  Otherwise, this appears to be a reach.

Dooley said this morning that Wilcox had not been offered the job yet.  Wilcox is in Knoxville and was at practice today.  Obviously this doesn't mean that he isn't going to go, but take it for what it's worth.  There have already been two other people that were supposedly hired for this position, so until I hear something official, the sources are meaningless.

Justin Wilcox? Sounds like a fat kid that ate paste in school. Seems like a settling pick to me. However, if we win six games next year, that's 17% improvement... Spin away spin doctors and prognosticators... This hire does nothing for me at the moment. It's certainly not inspirational...
