McCartney: CU job offered to Embree

So about that whole three finalists for the Colorado job post we put up a little while ago, it seems that there is only one finalist.  At least, that's what former Colorado head coach Bill McCartney is saying.  According to McCartney, who himself was a candidate for the job, the school has offered the job to former tight end and current Redskins tight ends coach Jon Embree.

Embree has been given a formal offer for the position with hopes that he'll hire Eric Bieniemy, another finalist for the job, the position of offensive coordinator.  McCartney says that while he was a candidate for the job, as soon as it became clear that he wasn't going to get the job, he started pushing for either Embree or Bieniemy.

"It was never about me doing it again," McCartney told The Denver Post. "It was about setting the table for a black man to come in (as head coach). And he (Mike Bohn) hired one. Now, give him a chance."

The report also says that neither Embree or Mike Bohn could be reached for comment, and that the word around the Washington Redskins office is that Embree has received the offer and is mulling it over.

Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain was also considered a finalist, but was deemed a longshot since he had no ties to the school.

I think Mike Leach would be the best possible hire for the Buffs in strictly football terms. Sure, he's not without controversy, and no, I don't think he will fit in with the atmosphere in Boulder very well, but the guy can flat-out coach. He is tough to defend, and that kind of offense will attract top talent especially in Pac 10 land. If Leach can recruit in Lubbock, Boulder is a piece of cake.

It does not matter who CU hires. Untill the CU President and Administrators suppor
ts the Athletic Department, CU will stink.

Enjoy your underachiever PAC 10.

I'll bet that Mike Leach would be interested, once he realizes and comes to grips with the fact that Miami doesn't want him. Leach would be a MUCH better hire than some nondescript tight ends coach from a bad NFL team. What's the difference between this Embree guy and Tim Brewster, who Minnesota couldn't get rid of fast enough? Of the jobs out there right now, other than Miami, what job is better than Colorado? For $2 mil a year (roughly what Leach got paid at Texas Tech), I'll bet he'd be all over it. He won more often than he lost at Texas freakin' Tech...ever been to Lubbock, TX? Boulder would be a better place to live and easier to recruit to.
Also, what about Gus Malzahn? The guy turned Tulsa into an offensive juggernaut, then did the same with a previously-inept Auburn offense. With CU headed to the PAC-10 and Cam Newton headed to the NFL, I can't imagine that Malzahn would say, "Nah, I'd rather stay in the cutthroat SEC, for half the money CU would pay, working for a guy who went 5-20 at his last coaching gig." Either Leach or Malzahn would be a HUGE boost in recruiting that this Embree guy is not going to provide.

Colorado you just don't get it...You will never be able to compete again, especially in the Pac 10 without a big time coach...You need a big name coach and if I am correct, they had a hell of a coach, and an ex-CU All American coaching at Mullen (DAVE LOGAN)...Get him and he'll get you back to the promised land....Mike Leach is also availble...

Gotta disagree with you on this one.  We hired a "big name" last time in Dan Hawkins and we all know how that turned out.  Embree's got experience at the pro level and is a proven recruiter.  Plus, he's got strong ties to the school and the community which is something that CU really needs right now.  There's also the likelihood that he'll bring on Bienemy as his offensive coordinator (who's also a proven recruiter).
Try to keep in mind that CU doesn't have the budget to go after a big name.  There aren't many big names that would take a pay cut to coach in Colorado (the max deal CU could offer was reported at $2 million).  They talked to some big names and they weren't interested.

Blah. So Colorado hires some unknown person.... to help rebuild their program. They should have gone after a big name. I mean they're Colorado for god's sake, not Ball State. The tight ends coach of the redskins...? Just because he was a former player and because he's black? Dont like it. There are so many top-notch assistants out there right now, just waiting to be snatched up. Colorado would have had their pickings, and they could have even gone after some good head coaches. Sigh.
