Over the last couple hours, the Internet has been abuzz with wild rumors that star Nebraska freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez had quit the team in the wake of the Huskers' 9-6 loss to Texas A&M -- and the epic chewing-out Martinez received from coach Bo Pelini -- on Saturday.

Back away from the cliff, though, Huskers fans; reports of Martinez's demise are likely greatly exaggerated. Here's what WOWT 6 in Omaha has just reported that while Martinez hasn't quit the team, he has likely broken a serious team rule:

Sources tell Channel 6 News Taylor Martinez missed a team meeting following last night's loss, but he has not left the team.

Following this report, Pelini told the Omaha World-Herald (in typically brusque fashion) that Martinez is, in fact, still a Husker:

Reached shortly before 8 p.m., Pelini said the status of his freshman quarterback had not changed since the end of Huskers' 9-6 loss Saturday at Texas A&M.

"He's still on the team," the coach said.

Pelini again declined to offer an explanation for the sideline incident on Sunday.

In all likelihood, this situation isn't fully resolved yet; if Martinez missed a mandatory team meeting, then he likely faces some sort of discipline, so even though he's on the team, his status for the Colorado game still needs to be specifically addressed. But that's a lot different than "has quit the team," so let's actually wait for that to happen before speculating about it.

Report: Taylor Martinez misses mandatory meeting

Taylor Martinez was getting his ass chewed because he called his dad from a private cell phone from the locker room before returning to the field which is a violation of Pelini's policy. Then when Bo confronted him about it Taylor called him a bitch. Taylor did skip this mandatory meeting yesterday because he is a Prima Dona and he thinks he can get away with it. A very reliable source inside the team is telling me that the unity council has voted to suspend Martinez for this Friday's game. Pelini is denying it and will probably just play it off as an injury because he doesn't like letting the public know about matters such as this, which he considers "family matters" for the team only. I don't like that Pelini loses control of his temper and the team during the game. He should be coaching and not ranting and raving about this. But Martinez had it coming. It just should have happend behind closed doors.

Report: Taylor Martinez misses mandatory meeting

My guess is that Martinez was being lectured by Coach Pelini, who was already in an agitated state, for blowing off the medical staff with regard to the treatment of his leg injury during the game.
It was reported during the game that the medical staff had requested a cart to transport martinez to the locker room for x-rays. Instead Martinez insisted he would walk.
Since when does a freshman quarterback know more than a highly trained medical staff who were taking the proper precautions to protect Martinez from further injury?
In Bo's mind, and he's right, that would be no different than Martinez ignoring a play call from the coaching staff and making his own call.

Pelini is nothing more than a bully the way he ranted and raved at Martinez and the refs all night.  This is not Bo's first college football game, but by the looks you could have surprised me.  Get a grip and move on, talk about hurting your recruiting prospects...thats a coach I want teaching my boy, hardly.  Arizona's Stoops is the same way...classic bully.  The announcers call it intensity and that they are really into the game, but let's call it what it is, a coach throwing an immature temper tantrum for 60 minutes.  I know in this day and age of college football there are tv cameras everywhere, taping everthing, but at some point you have to control yourself and do your "coaching" in the locker room.

I sure would like to know what the ass chewing was all about. Bo needs to tone it down, he makes himself look foolish. I would think parents of recruits would want none of that for their kids. Check out You Tube for the A&M player grabbing Ben Cotton's junk in the dog pile.

Report: Taylor Martinez misses mandatory meeting

You have to remember that Taylor Martinez is only a freshman and that the pressure put on his shoulders to carry the team to victory must be intoxicating, especially with such a "passionate" head coach.
Give him an offseason to understand the role that he plays and lets see what he can do in the Big Ten (now 12?) next season.

I didn't get to see the game however it certainly appears from the  video like Bo Pellini just flat lost it on Martinez. As to the officiating in the Big 12... with the clear exception of the big 2 (Texas & Oklahoma) along with the cult living in College Station (A&M) Big 12 officials go out of their way to make sure there can no appearance of favoritism by calling more penalties against the home teams. Of course in A&M 's case they've needed all the help they can get because they've been irrelevant.

Report: Taylor Martinez misses mandatory meeting

It's one thing for a head coach to chew out his quarterback, but Pelini went completely off the deep end. My suggestion for Bo is to recruit quarterbacks that can actually throw forward passes with accuracy, if opponents are putting eight defenders in the box to stop the Husker running.

Nebraska's offense in last year's Big 12 championship game was a joke and it didn't look much better last night.

Granted, the refs weren't very good and the disparity in penalties was ridiculous, but it doesn't take a sophisticated football fan to see that the Huskers have some serious issues with their offense.
