Texas Tech shows us how not to run an onside kick

Texas Tech was able to walk away with a 45-38 win against Baylor in the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, but not before they took some time out of their busy schedule to teach us all how to not execute an onside kick.  To set the scene, it was early in the first quarter when the Red Raiders had just scored on a 10-yard run from Eric Stephens to tie the score at 7-7.  I guess since it was so painfully obvious that defense was not going to be played in this game, Tommy Tuberville decided to try an onside kick.

That's when this happened.

Yes, that's right, Raiders hands team.  You're on the hands team so you can just stand there and stare at a live ball at your feet and allow Baylor's Terrance Ganoway to pick it up and take it to the house.  Brilliant.

The greatest part of all this?  The same thing happened to Texas Tech in their game against Iowa State last week when Jeremy Reeves returned an onside kick 42 yards for a touchdown to ice the game late in the fourth quarter.

So maybe Tuberville and the Raiders should stick to kicking deep.

Well Said Raiding Texas...  I don't know whats worse losing to the F'en Iowa State Cyclones or barely beating freakin Baylor at the Cotton Bowl.  It is unbelievable what Leach meant as a Coach, and you try to be optimistic with Tuberville but he is garbage!  No excuse for a team as talented as us, a team that blew out Nebraska in Lincoln, returned almost everyone this year and this is the product.  Tuberville is horrendous!  Now I know why Auburn fans practically ran him out of town.  We used to compete with OU and Texas 5 star recruits now we never will.  The playcalling is horrible and Potts sucks!  Give Sticks A CHANCE!

It doesn't matter if the ball hadn't gone 10 yards. That's no excuse to sit there looking stupid while a Baylor player runs up, grabs the ball and laughs all the way to the end zone. They could've circled it and dared a Baylor player to grab it, then pound him into the ground when he did.

Tech has never benefited from a team full of blue chip players like Texas, OU, Florida, etc. But over the past 10 years, they had kids that played smart. That's what made a team full of 2- and 3-star players able to compete with those NFL factories in Austin and Norman.

Now, this team is playing absolutely stupid. Just mindbogglingly stupid. It's impossible to understand how you can have this much dropoff in one season when you returned as many players as they did. It IS the coaching.

limodriver, he probably didn't bring it up since it doesn't matter - the ten yards is only relevant when the kicking team recovers the kick, as the ball is up for grabs after ten yards.  Before ten yards only the receiving team can legally take possession.  It makes no sense as to why the Tech players stopped as if the play was dead... that's just poor coaching.

Tech won this game not because of Tubberville, but in spite of him. This guy makes some dumb calls. Poor coaching........
Anybody who thinks this guy will make Tech a winner is a blind fool. All the returning starters they have, and they seem like they are not prepared. It is the coaches job to make sure his guys are ready to play. Two onside kicks returned against you in two weeks. And they think Leach is a bone head!!!

Texas Tech shows us how not to run an onside kick

If anyone is happy Leach is gone they're nutt's! Yeah he made a stubborn dumba*# decision relative to the Baby James situaiton but it becomes more and more obvious each week the Tech Adiminstration panicked when they hired Tommy Tuberville. If the first 5 weeks have shown us anything... it's WHY Tommy Tubverville was fired at Auburn after his last two consecutive losing seasons. We're clearly one of the worst coached and ill-prepared football teams in Division 1! In fact it's gone beyond embarrassing.

How bout the coordinators Willis and Brown? Now those two are special huh? The Wide Receivers have dropped more balls in the first 5 weeks than in the entire seasons under ML. As for the Defense... I think one can easily make a case that while our Defense was darn sure nothing to write home about under Ruffin McNeil... it was a helluva better than this unit and scheme Willis is running out there each weekend.

As for two consecutive weeks in which Texas Tech has allowed wto TD's on two onside kicks... correct me if I'm wrong but umm... it's Tommy Tuberville that coaches the Special Teams. Enough said!

Does anyone really need any more evidence that Tommy Tuberville is an absolute joke? Plays like this are the result of bad coaching. And where is that SEC defense? This defense is far worse than it ever was under the completely offense-minded Leach. Texas Tech won this game in spite of Tuberville, not because of him.
And no, I'm not a "bring back Leach" guy. He screwed up, it's over, we must move on. But get someone else in here. This guy's a joke. He was unemployed for over a year for a reason. Jesus f'n christ.
