There's insane news from the land of Sparta today, as Michigan State tight end Dion Sims is one of 10 people implicated in a theft ring involving over 100 laptops stolen from -- of all places -- the Detroit Public School System :

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and Detroit Public Schools officials today announced felony charges against a Michigan State University football player and nine others allegedly involved in a crime ring that stole and sold more than $158,000 in laptop computers last school year.

Dion Sims, 19, a player for the Spartans, is accused of receiving and concealing stolen property, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Internal tracking devices led officials to stolen DPS computers in seven other states, Canada and the United Arab Emirates, according to the investigation that involved several law enforcement agencies.

The ring was involved in the theft of about 104 DPS laptops that were stolen last school year and sold on eBay, Craigslist and to friends.

Mark Dantonio has yet to issue a comment, mainly because he's recovering from a postgame heart attack . But wait a second: what if Dantonio's heart attack wasn't the result of anything that happened during the game at all, but just receiving word about the scope and scale of the investigation against his sophomore tight end? Hey, we don't know.

But regardless of how long it takes MSU to comment on the situation, if the allegations are even partly true, Sims has got to be gone, gone, gone. There's messed up, very messed up, and "stealing over 100 laptops from schools" messed up.

I am not a Michigan State fan, but there are a few things I would like to emphasize here. First, stealing laptops from children is terrible. Second, this news has no affect on how much I enjoyed watching the Spartans beat Notre Dame last Saturday. Third, we all know that there are hundreds of Notre Dorks around the country right now, clad in a minimum of three ND articles of clothing while driving a car with a Notre Dame bumper sticker and license plate holder, that are trying to convince themselves that the loss to Michigan State isn't as bad because at least ND is morally superior and not a bunch of thugs. Fourth, the reason I will continue to hate ND and its fans is because of reason three stated above.

Real_Zeel please give me some good examples on how this is "a program that is out of control". I would like some actual reasons and some good reasoning for how you can take two situations, as i'm sure it will be, and how you can relay that into a program out of control.

I believe that the MSU football program had some previous insight into this actions - he hasn't been playing at all this year and has essentially fallen off the map... And the depth chart, haha.

This is not a reflection on Michigan State. It will be a great day when people realize the value of self-responsibility and stop attempting to blame college football programs. These athletes are given the opportunity to get a world-class education at a great price. The pressure on them to perform is great, but they are still responsible for how they handle themselves.

Unfortunately, the schools at which they are enrolled bear the brunt of their public embarrassment. Unfortunate, yet true.

Unfortunately, unless he is a repeat offender, he will not get anything more than a slap on the wrist, probably just probation.  We'll be forced to listen to the usual line-up of apologists about the privations of his growing up years, probably the "abuse-excuse", whether it's real or not, and on and on.  No real punishment will be forthcoming, except that he will no doubt lose his scholarship, which would have been worth a lot more than a hundred laptops.  We have reached a point in this country where no one is ever required to take responsibility for, much less to pay for their bad actions.
